Sonic Practices

Picture
I work with sound and listening through a variety of sonic practices.
These practices allow me to access listening and sound through a number of different modalities.
In my academic work, I theorize listening through the embodied practice of soundwalk.
In my artistic practice, I explore listening and sound with a therapeutic approach
through the practice of facilitating sound baths.

Sound Bath

In this sonic practice it's common that the facilitator of a sound bath uses a variety of instruments, usually including crystal or Tibetan sound bowls.
The sounds and vibrations experienced in the sound bath can be understood as an event or journey where through which participants are led.
Rather than being a performance to be spectated, sound baths can be understood as being events to be intimately witnessed and are therapeutic, spiritual, meditative, musical, or contemplative in nature.

. . . . . . . . . . .

As I reflect upon what sound baths are to me I feel that to listen during a sound bath is to be touched.
During a sound bath the listener is touched, held, and submerged in a bath of vibration.

The key aspect here is the act of listening paired with vulnerability and a sense of being receptive to allowing one's self to be touched by sound.

Soundwalk

In this sonic practice it's common for the facilitator to guide participants either sighted or not sighted (perhaps with blindfolds) through a planned route.
With this practice the experiential intention can vary, it can be artistically curated, therapeutic, or meditative.
